Discover the magical world of wild penguins in their natural habitat on the Evening Penguin Tour...
Take an exciting evening adventure and discover what life is like for wild penguins as you observe them in their natural habitat.
The tour begins with a scenic drive by 4WD which takes you over Akaroa's extinct Volcano crater rim before you are greeted by the stunning beauty of Pohatu Bay.
Guided by a team of experts who know when and where is best to locate these inquisitive creatures, you'll then have the opportunity to observe the fascinating behaviour of penguins as they explore and socialise on the water - if you're lucky you may even see some returning to shore at dusk!
You'll also see them up close in their nesting homes which are used as part of conservation efforts to monitor the colony, and you'll get an insight into the conservation efforts being made to preserve their lives in the Flea Bay colony.
A fascinating and thrilling adventure for all ages that will provide memories to last a lifetime!

Hi there, Thank you so very much for your review and having appreciated the area and our conservation work. I can assure you that the money paid on the tour directly help protecting the little guy. Building new homes, purchasing research tools, supporting the south island wildlife hospital that care for injured birds... We wish you all the best. Kindly, Kevin.
The whole experience was incredible! From Danielle being super lovely and helpful during booking to Ben introducing us the penguins and the incredible work he is a part of protecting the penguins and bringing back the native flora and fauna! The penguins were so cute and the seals were an added bonus! Would do it again!

Thank you very much for your review and having found your time informative. We wish you all the best ^-^ The penguin team
This was a wonderful experience. But it can get muddy and walking those precarious paths along the steep sides of the hills is only meant for the sure-footed. Also, the drive to Akaroa from Christchurch is really long because of the terrain, deceptive as it appears so close on the map. Bear in mind that it would be darkness by the time the tour finishes, and the drive back to Christchurch along the extremely bendy roads in full darkness is scary to say the least. If we knew this, we would have booked accommodation in Akaroa for the evening instead. Also, we were almost out of fuel and there was no petrol pump in sight in Akaroa late at night. Fortunately we made it back to the nearest petrol kiosk in Christchuch with 2okm to spare! As a whole, good experience, but please come prepared with full tank of fuel and for the journey back.
I loved doing this tour. Our guides Joey and Geraldine were amazing, they are really passionante, it's really interesting to learn not only about pinguins, but also about the place, the history, the fauna and so much more. And yes, we saw penguins and their chicks !!! We saw them close in the nesting boxes, but also on the bay waiting to come back on shore. We also saw some fur seals and some Cormorants drying on the side. The money of this tour is for helping the preservation of the land and the growth of the blue penguins populations. It would be really sad if they ended up being extinct and I think it's totally worth it.

Special experience cant see elsewhere
the place and overall environment is well conserved, unlike other penguin tours, this one is much less commerciallized, feels like the tour fee i paid can actual help protecting those little minions. i think so and hope so. Keep up your good work!
